
The article examines a study of 69 Mexican metropolitan areas showing a consistent pattern of population loss in urban centers alongside rapid peripheral expansion. Between 1990 and 2020, city centers lost around 2.5 million residents, increasing daily travel distances and contributing to transport pressure, emissions, unequal access to services, and declining urban efficiency. The research highlights affordable housing and better use of existing central infrastructure as major challenges for more sustainable and inclusive urban development.
